Refuge Mezzalama

Located at 3009 meters of altitude, in the magnificent Rosa’s district, the refuge “Ottorino Mezzalama” maybe represents the ideal itself of “refuge”: a little, wooden structure, set on a out crop of rock, always hit by winds. It was built in 1934, and soon dedicated to the famous ski tourer Ottorino Mezzalama, on recommenadation of alpinist Pietro Ghiglione who, in 1927, mourned for the lack of a good point of support in that zone. How to get there?

Varasc.it has dutifully come there the 5th of July, saturday 7th August and finally the 23rd August 2004. Here you are the chronicle of 5th July walk, maybe the best for the massive presence of wildlife. I left St. Jacques at 7 o’clock AM, and I reached by 7.20 the little village of Fiery. By 7.44 I was in the beautiful Verra Plan, going up towards the upper plan anlong path number 7, because I didn’t want to use the beautiful ridge, which is heavily eroded. However, it wasn’t fit for my dog. By 11.10 AM I finally reached the refuge, shady and comfortable as usual.

The refuge offers hot meals and 40 beds, in the beaufitul dormitory upstairs; the winter apartment offers instead only 20 places. I personally recommend the months between July and September; the refuge is run by Turin CAI section, and the telephone number is the following: + 39 0125 307226. There’s also the possibility to go towards the refuge “Lambronecca” passing behind the building (if you look down, you’ll surely see some beautiful chamoises), like I did saturday 7th August 2004, waling along a pretty alpinistic aim. The path goes along between grey rocks, with the Little Verra Glacier on the right and Rollin’s Hump on your left.
