Cuneaz

Located at 2032 meters over sea level, Cuneaz village seems almost incredible to the trekker who, from Crest, follows its signals. In facts it’s located further, higher and on Crest’s right: hidden and invisible from cableway terminal, it reveals itself as a pretty important village, with ozens of baites and rascard; walser remnants are easily recognizables. Its name seems to derive from a Franco – Provençal word Keugn, which means “wedge”; Varasc.it come back on monday 26th July 2004, going towards Pinter Lakes. This pictoresque village it’s in facts located at the beginning of the omonymous valley, crossed by the omonymous torrent: a world of silent woods and meadows, where it’s quite usual to find wild animals, especially in July when ther aren’t so many tourists.

The village was once dwelled all year long: the cows were taken for the good season on the lower and the upper meadows. Cuneaz was a typical self – sufficient village, with hay warehouses, and even a big bread oven, restored and admirable nowadays, even if it’s really old. That oven was particularly important, if you think that, by the end of XVIII century, the community counted 76 heads. More in details, in Cuneaz there’s a beautiful chapel consecrated to St.Lawrence, visible immediately to those who come from Crest; there’s also a medieval (XV century) rascard, another one dating back to 1677 and three others dating 1778, 1708 and 1717. There also were a school in one of commune’s buildings, and a mill, located lower.
