St.
Jacques
Reachable
from Champoluc by the Route 506, St. Jacques lays at 1689 meters on sea
level. It closes Ayas Valley as the last important village, at foothills
of Rosa’s massif. St
Jacques, important start and arrive for many itineraries, is a typical
small village which, although supplied by hotels and normal urban
services, still presents and old urbanistic configuration: rarely the
houses could win over the rocky and steepy nature of the place, as you
can see at first sight. The
village is crossed by Evancon too, but the torrent is pretty more
violent than in Champoluc, absolutely unfit for any kind of sport such
rafting, or canoing. Another note: there’d exisist a path which,
starting from Frachey’s second lay – by, would link to the end of
Champoluc – Frachey Walk. Nevertheless, at about halfway the path
disappears, because of several slumps fallen in the past years.
In
the end, Saint Jacques had been the mosti mportant Walser center in the
whole Ayas Valley. This place was called, in effect, "Canton des
Allemands".
